A wedding speech has many important aspects, but humor is definitely an essential one. While a groom speech shouldn’t been funny from start to finish, a bit of humor is appreciated by everyone – provided that the humor isn’t offensive and that the speech still carries some emotional weight.
When I was writing a speech, I knew that it had to be funny, as well as respectful to everyone. Of course, the groom’s father also delivered a speech. I needed to make sure that he felt appreciated and respected, as well as his daughter. No one wanted to have an awkward party after insulting jokes were delivered.
The Key To Good Humor In Speeches
During my wedding speech, I used humor to ensure that the whole party was attentive. Humor was used intermittently, which was an great tool to focus everyone’s attention where it should have been. For every wedding toast, the center of everyone’s attention should obviously be the groom, and of course, the bride.
This tactic is most wisely used when you deliver a normal speech, but intersperse the occasional joke. Your speech should have emotional content, but humor will both relax and focus your audience. I was emotional and anxious,so this was helpful to both the audience and myself.
An additional tip that I found regarding giving a groom speech was that I should be informal, and that I should engage the audience personally. This is a toast, after all – not a lecture. The groom’s speech should be delivered like a conversation with close friends. This will generally be the situation anyhow.
Maintain contact with the eyes of the people in your audience, and don’t stare in one direction aimlessly. I also practiced my speech with friends before I had to deliver it to a larger audience, which was helpful.
These techniques will help you deliver a powerful and funny groom speech. For more ideas regarding your wedding speech, find some examples to follow.
